Kursk region expands cooperation with Russia’s Northern capital

Today, Alexander Mikhailov, the Governor of Kursk region, is busy in the city of St. Petersburg heading an official and business delegation which includes deputy governors, chairs of the sectoral committees, rectors of the Southwest and Kursk state universities, the chief physician of the regional cancer detection center, chief executives of industrial, agricultural and processing companies. The local business community is represented by CEOs of the leading enterprises of Kursk region such as Aviaavtomatika named after V. Tarasov JSC, Kursk Electric Apparatus Plant (KEAZ), PJSC Korenevsky Plant of Low-Voltage Equipment, GOTEK, Pharmstandard-Leksredstva, Kurskrezinotekhnika, JSC Kursk Factory Mayak, Ecoproduct-K, Agropromkomplektatsiya-Kursk LLC, Belaya Pritsa-Kursk LLC, Fresh Bread Project, Kursk Integrated Bread Plant, Konyok-Gorbunok, Kurskexportkhleb. The business meetings and negotiations between representatives of Kursk businesses and their colleagues from St. Petersburg took place at the Import Substitution and Localization Center of Saint-Petersburg.

In Smolny (the residence of the Government of St. Petersburg, Alexander Mikhailov and his colleagues Georgy Poltavchenko and Alexander Drozdenko held a face-to-face working meeting followed by a meeting with the official delegation. The participants addressed the topical issues of expanding inter-regional cooperation amidst today’s economic crisis. All the parties noted the good prospects and opportunities for a breakthrough in cooperation.

Kursk region tries to makes the best of its potential in expanding interregional contacts, Alexander Mikhailov said. Besides St. Petersburg, we are implementing interregional cooperation agreements with the Republic of Crimea, Moscow, Sevastopol, Kaluga, Oryol, Murmansk and Rostov regions, Krasnoyarsk and Altai krais. The new agreements will push the limits of interaction in various sectors (industry, agriculture, education, culture, youth policy and tourism).

Speaking about economy, the trade turnover between Kursk region and St. Petersburg had exceeded 3 billion rubles by the end of 2015. In particular, supplies of grain, meat and meat products, confectionery, cereals, canned milk, biological products and other products to the Northern capital exceeded 1 billion rubles.

“We are ready to substantially increase supplies and expand the range of food products,” Alexander Mikhailov emphasized. “Kursk region is capable of feeding 10 million people. Annual exports of food products to other subjects of Russia exceeds 26 billion rubles. Kursk region is consistently among the leaders in the production of grain, sugar beet, potatoes, pork, with an upward trend in the production of vegetables. In particular, supplies of meat from our region cover 10% of demand from the meat processing plants of St. Petersburg.”

Another showcase is the successful cooperation with JSC Peterburgsky Traktorny Zavod (St. Petersburg Tractor Plant) which has to date supplied 750 tractors for agricultural works in Kursk region. 20 major local industrial enterprises cooperate with partners in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region. Last year alone, total supplies of their products amounted to 1.3 billion rubles, a 136% increase year-on-year. Kursk region has also achieved notable progress in the development of import-substituting industries. This issue is also on the agenda for the tourism industry.

As a result of the visit, a long-term agreement for trade, economic, research, technology, social and cultural cooperation was signed between the government of St. Petersburg and the government of Kursk region, and a similar agreement between the government of Kursk region and the government of Leningrad region.
